The origin of its name comes from the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who baptized it as "Land of Fires", for he was surprised with the bond fires and smoke along the coastline that were permanently lit by the natives to protect themselves from the austral cold.
In this mythical environment lived the Selk’nam, who called their land Karukinka, and the Yamanas who were mainly located along the channels and southern fjords.
